Tips for the correct crimping of cable lugs:
Please make sure that the cable is stripped cleanly and that there is no dirt or residue, neither on the cable nor in the cable lug. The stripping should be about 10% longer than the insertion dimension of the cable lug or connector, as the cable lug or connector expands by about 10% during the crimping process. The selection of the cable lug and the crimping tool should be coordinated. This is the only way to achieve proper crimping, i.e. over- or under-crimping. Matched crimping tools and cable lugs prevent increased transition resistances and resulting temperature increases, which can ultimately cause cable fires.
For the optimal crimping of our cable lugs, the crimping instructions have been specified by the manufacturer and must be strictly adhered to. There are notes on the type of crimping tool (hexagonal crimping, mandrel crimping or notch crimping, for example) and how often a cable lug must be crimped. As a rule, at least 2 crimps will be necessary for our cable lugs in the range of 25 mm2 - 95 mm2. The first pressing is always done from the eyelet towards the cable in the case of ring lugs or from the centre outwards in the case of butt connectors. You can choose between manual presses or hydraulic presses. Since both presses have the same press inserts, equally good results are achieved. Of course, a hydraulic press will make the work easier if several pressings are required for high cross-sections. For more frequent use, we recommend our pressing tool K5, which is recommended by the manufacturer for all notch pressings from 6 mm2 - 50 mm2 for our ring lugs and butt connectors.
The right choice of cable lug:
There is a very large selection of cable lugs on the market. A distinction is made between:
- Compression cable lugs according to DIN 46235 with embossing information.
- Tubular cable lugs made of electrolytic copper (EN13600), mainly for class 2
- Tubular cable lugs made of electrolytic copper (EN13600), mainly for class 5-6,
- Crimping cable lugs according to DIN 46234, mainly for class 2-6.
Crimping cable lugs are processed with a mandrel according to DIN.
Furthermore, cables are divided into the following classes:
- Class 1: solid conductors (cables made of one conductor)
- Class 2: stranded conductors (cables consisting of a few conductors)
- Class 5: finely stranded conductors (e.g. our battery cables of the 24 series...)
- Class 6: finely stranded conductors (e.g. our power cables of the 20... series).
The tubular cable lug:
As our battery cables consist of fine and superfine strands, we only offer tubular cable lugs made of tin-plated and pre-annealed electrolytic copper, which are especially suitable for this type of construction. A widening of the cable entry makes it much easier to insert the individual strands, especially when the strands are slightly spaced apart during splicing, thus increasing the overall diameter.
The tubular cable lug is the most widely used cable lug. It is somewhat shorter than the classic DIN cable lug and has different tube dimensions, but this does not harm the connection. However, this means that not one tubular cable lug and one crimping tool can be used for all classes of conductors.
While class 2 conductors are processed with a hexagonal crimping, this is generally not permissible for class 5+6 conductors and leads to a poorer connection. The cable lugs of the "F" series for our battery and power cables are specially designed for fine and superfine stranded cables and are processed with a notch crimp. This is due to the characteristics of fine and superfine stranded cables.
The tubular cable lug is somewhat cheaper than the DIN crimp cable lug and has no markings for the crimps on the cable lug. The manufacturer specifies the number of crimps and the exact position in a data sheet. You will find this data directly in the article description of the respective cable lug and in the adjacent table. On the cable lug you will find abbreviations for the manufacturer, the hole diameter, the nominal cross-section, the identification letter "F" for conductor class 5+6 and the manufacturer's article number of the cable lug.
Professional crimping methods are mandrel or notch crimping. Our K5 tool is recommended for notch crimping!
