General Description

The Victron (ORI121217040) Orion XS is a professional, highly efficient 50A DC-to-DC charging booster with integrated Bluetooth functionality and automatic engine running detection. With its extremely compact size and astonishing efficiency of up to 98%, which results in low heat generation and eliminates the need for a fan, it is ideal for use in a wide range of applications.

With its 4-stage charging characteristic, the B2B charging booster is ideal for both lead-acid and lithium batteries. An unlimited number of these devices can be connected in parallel to increase the output power and thus accelerate battery charging.

For use in dual-battery systems in vehicles, motorhomes, or boats where the alternator and starter battery are used to charge the auxiliary battery. Controlled charging is essential, especially for vehicles with intelligent Euro 5 and Euro 6 alternators or where voltage drops occur due to long cable runs.

The DC-DC converter can also be used as a constant-voltage power supply to directly supply sensitive 12V loads with a stable voltage. In power supply mode, the output voltage remains stable regardless of the connected load or varying input voltages (within the specified range). The desired output voltage can be easily set via the app.

The Orion XS can be monitored and programmed via Bluetooth and can optionally be controlled remotely via a remote on/off switch.

Intelligent Alternator Compatibility

More and more vehicle manufacturers are using intelligent ECU (Engine Control Unit)-controlled alternators to increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Intelligent alternators provide a variable output voltage and shut down when not needed. This means that auxiliary batteries are no longer properly charged while driving due to too low voltage or the alternator shutting down. The wide input voltage range of this charging booster ensures fast and complete charging of the supply batteries, even in Euro 5 and 6 vehicles.

Integrated Engine Running Detection

The Orion XS (formerly Smart Buckboost) B2B charger automatically detects whether the vehicle's engine is running or not. This is possible thanks to the integrated engine shutdown detection. This ensures that the charging booster only operates when the alternator is also operating. This also prevents the vehicle's on-board voltage from becoming too low. There is no need to intervene in the vehicle's system, search for a D+ signal, install a separate engine running sensor, or make changes to the CAN bus system. When the engine is switched off, the auxiliary battery is reliably disconnected from the starter battery. As an alternative to the integrated engine running detection, the Vicron Orion XS DC-DC charging booster can also be activated by a forced charging permission, e.g., connected to the ignition switch or D+.

Silent Operation

The Orion XS ORI121217040 does not have an integrated fan, which makes it silent and also results in fewer wearing parts. The intelligent electronic design and heat dissipation via the aluminum housing eliminate the need for a fan.

Configuration and Monitoring

Bluetooth Smart integrated: The wireless solution for setting up, monitoring, and updating the booster with Apple and Android smartphones, tablets, or other devices. Many parameters can be customized with the Victron Connect app, including the charging current in 0.1A increments, as well as the input voltage range and charging parameters. In the Victron Connect app, the most important live data and alarm notifications are already available at a glance in the device list, without the need to connect to the device.
VE.direct connection: This is available for a wired connection to a Victron communication center, such as the Cerbo GX or the Ekrano GX. This allows the charge booster's data to be displayed on a monitor connected to the Victron communication center (e.g., GX Touch50 or GX Touch70), and the configuration to be adjusted.If the communication center is connected to the internet, the data can even be viewed worldwide via the Victron VRM portal.
In vehicles, motorhomes, and boats with multiple Victron components already installed, expanding with a Victron communication center is a sensible option, as all information from the connected devices is consolidated in the communication center and displayed on a single screen. The monitor is already integrated into the Ekrano GX central unit.

Adaptive 4-stage charging algorithm:

This makes it suitable for all common battery types, such as GEL, AGM, lead-acid, and lithium batteries. Eight charging programs are pre-programmed for common battery types. Custom charging programs can be fully configured if required. Configurable with the VictronConnect app.

Alternator overload protection in conjunction with lithium batteries

Current limiting is particularly important when charging lithium batteries via the alternator. Due to the low internal resistance of lithium batteries, very high currents can flow from the alternator via the starter battery to the lithium battery. This can cause problems for both the alternator and the existing wiring in the vehicle. The Orion XS charging booster limits currents to a safe maximum of 50A. Furthermore, the charging current can be individually adjusted via the app.

Undervoltage protection

Switches off the charging booster when the input voltage (starter battery) drops below the set (freely configurable) voltage value and reconnects the charging booster when the input voltage rises above the set reconnection value. This ensures that the starter battery remains ready for use at all times and is not over-discharged. The voltage values ??are configurable via the VictronConnect app.

Comprehensive electronic protection

Protection features include overload, short circuit, and overtemperature. The charger is protected against overtemperature by reducing the output power when the maximum product temperature is reached.
