In their camper van or caravan, owners want a good internet connection like the one at home, so they can, for example, check emails, stream the news from the ARD media library on a time-shift basis, or continue watching their Netflix series while on vacation. They also don't want to miss out on the electronic newspaper on their tablet or plan the next leg of their trip with Google Maps. Moving their home office into the motorhome and working remotely while on the move are also among the wishes of campers. However, mobile phone reception or the Wi-Fi signal at the campsite or parking space is often limited inside the camper or caravan. It may also be that the Wi-Fi at the campsite or parking space is subject to a fee, and they are looking for a cheaper solution. With the SELFSAT MWR 5550, SELFSAT offers the perfect all-in-one solution for stable and good Wi-Fi coverage while traveling or at the campsite or parking space.
The solution is also compatible with Starlink, offers GPS tracking of the vehicle, is VPN-capable (e.g., with OpenVPN from NordVPN, CyberGhost, and many other providers, but also with WireGuard from Proton or even with your own FRITZ!Box at home), and supports logging into campsite Wi-Fi networks with login pages (captive portal).
At its heart is an internet router, which can be powered, for example, by the 12-volt vehicle electrical system. It can receive an incoming Wi-Fi signal or, thanks to an inserted SIM card, a mobile network signal from outside and transmit it inside the motorhome or caravan as a private, password-protected Wi-Fi signal. This gives you a significantly better signal inside than you would get directly from your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or TV. Furthermore, you can connect multiple devices to the internet router simultaneously. It has no SIM lock and can be used with top-up (prepaid) or contract (postpaid) SIM cards from various providers. Since it has two SIM card slots, foreign SIM cards can also be used abroad, for example. An external antenna, which is mounted on the camper or caravan and connected to the internet router inside, ensures good reception.
The antenna receives the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi signal from the campsite or parking space, as well as the 4G LTE or 5G mobile network signal. Thanks to MIMO technology (Multiple In Multiple Out), it can send and receive multiple data packets simultaneously to achieve the best possible connection speed. The antenna (protection class IP67, except for the cable outlet) can be mounted directly on the roof of the motorhome or caravan. Thanks to a rubber seal, it protects against water ingress, but can also be glued with Sikaflex or Dekasyl, for example. The scope of delivery also includes a 6.5 cm long thread extension with an outer diameter of 35 mm, which enables installation on roofs of different thicknesses. The antenna cables are routed through the inside of the thread into the vehicle interior. Alternatively, the antenna can be mounted on an optionally available roof mounting plate. This can also be used with a roof clamp, for example. The antenna cable can be glued to the roof using Sikaflex or Dekasyl (and additionally screwed if necessary). In this case, the antenna cables can be routed inside through an existing or optionally available roof duct. The antenna cable length is 1 m. Any required 1 m or 2 m cable extensions are available as options.
Connecting to your internet router's Wi-Fi is as easy as in a hotel or at home. The initial connection can be established using the QR codes on the internet router or using the Wi-Fi name and password. The internet router's simplified, user-friendly interface is equally suitable for Apple and Android smartphones, tablets, and laptops and is operated via the internet browser. Therefore, no app installation is required.
Connect the Wi-Fi router to the Wi-Fi network of your campsite or parking space or to the cellular network via the external antenna. Use the long-range 2.4 GHz or more stable and faster 5 GHz Wi-Fi signal emitted by your Wi-Fi router to surf the internet on your smartphone or tablet, read an e-newspaper, or stream content from Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, YouTube, or the TV channels' media libraries on your smart TV. Your router is already programmed to work with a Starlink antenna.
